Training for Line Staff Moving into Supervisor Roles
It is common business practice to move successful employees up into supervisor roles, but, far too often, this happens without the training and support to ensure that they will be successful. I recall a retiree, who rose through the ranks of IT businesses, telling me, “I never really liked management.” Like so many, he was left to “sink or swim” without the necessary support. A better approach was taken by the small manufacturer in Vermont that engaged me to train and coach a 29-year employee promoted to supervisor. I have enjoyed training and helping him practice skills including managing staff expectations, giving constructive feedback, conducting individual supervision meetings, using effective communication techniques, and dealing with difficult personalities. I am confident that this kind of training and support will build his confidence, support positive staff morale, and foster long-term business success!
