Problem Solving for Leaders

A key leadership competency is effectively solving problems and teaching problem solving skills to others. This includes recognizing problems as they occur, understanding when to intervene, analysis and solutions development, and training skills. A positive attitude is also required, including a commitment to ensure problems are resolved effectively with a willingness to step in when required.

Of course, we all want to avoid having problems whenever possible. It is thus important to adopt a “Five P Philosophy” -- prior planning prevents poor performance. But, even if you do that well, some problems are inevitable and when to intervene (or not) is always a judgement call. Once you recognize a problem, it is important to assess if the issue will sort out on its own. It is always tempting to avoid problems and hope for the best, but a key leadership competency is knowing when you need to develop and implement an appropriate plan of action.

Another important aspect is training others in problem solving skills. You don’t want to do it all yourself! When a problem occurs, will your team members be confident and know what to do? Creating a culture where people feel competent and empowered to take on workplace challenges is a key aspect of leadership.

In a Harvard Business Review article titled “How Leaders Can Push Employees Without Stressing Them Out,” Karen Firestone writes “Studies show that when leaders create a safe and supportive environment, individuals tend to feel more connected to that leader, perform at a higher level, and experience less stress than when they feel unattached to their boss.” By achieving that, you can be assured that your team members will be ready to take on workplace problems!

We each have an extraordinary opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives, including our own. Don’t underestimate your impact!
